If you’re looking for interesting box scores that feature a ton of interesting Jays prospects, the Doubledays are the team for you to follow! From Carlos Perez to Gustavo Pierre, from Egan Smith to Daniel Webb, there are a ton of guys to keep tabs on in this squad. Case and point is the opening game that saw the entire staff shutout Batavia. The staff was led by Egan Smith who threw 5 shutout innings, allowing only 3 hits and 2 BB, and striking out 7 for the 12-0 blowout win!!

Gustavo Pierre went 2 for 5 while still playing SS for the DD, and he hit his 1st HR of the season. Not to be outdone, Carlos Perez went 3 for 5 with a triple. John Roberts (23) went 2 for 4 with a double and a triple, and the newly signed draft pick Marcus Knecht got his 1st hit and scored 2 runs to kick off his minor league career.

Here is a review of the major events in the minors for the Jays on Saturday, 24th of April:

AAA Las Vegas – Lost 2-1 to Sacramento

The 51s were stung by a very effective Trevor Cahill and Sacramento pen, who came in and dominated them over 5 innings (1ER) and 4 innings respectively.

Brad Mills (2-1, 2.19) took the loss despite providing another outstanding start. He lasted 7 innings, allowed 4 hits and 2 walks while striking out 8. His season totals indicate just how dominant Brad has been this season in AAA: 2-1, 2.19, 24.2 IP (just over 6 innings per start average), 20 hits allowed, 6 ER, 1 HR, 6 BB, 32 Ks, and hitter have a .222 average against him thus far. LHBs in particular are being dominated by Brad as they hold a meager .118 average against him. It’s nice to have this kind of insurance in AAA for the Jays. I’m not hoping he’s required any time soon because the Jays starters have been great thus far, but he is great security.

Josh Roenicke (0.00 ERA over 8.2 IP) was great once again in relief, as he did not allow a hit or walk over 2 innings of work while striking out 3.

It’s surprising that LV only had the 1 run since they did manage 7 hits and 4 walks in the game, they just couldn’t hit with RISP as they were only 1 for 13 in RISP chances in the game.

Jarrett Hoffpauir (.293) was the only LV hitter with 2 hits (including a double), and he also managed a walk.

Brett Wallace (.283) and Chris Lubanski (.273) had 1 double a piece.

Here is a review of the major events in the minors for the Jays on Wednesday, 21st of April:

AAA Las Vegas –Postponed

AA New Hampshire – Lost 13-3 vs Trenton (NYY)

The Fishercats were shut down by one of the arms I highlighted in my On The Level post for the 6th of April in NYY prospect David Phelps – a great guy to keep an eye on in fantasy leagues. He threw 6 shutout innings against NH, allowing only 4 hits and 1 walk while getting 6 Ks.

NH did manage to get some runs in on the Trenton relievers, with Eric Thames leading the way with a 2 for 4 day and his first HR of 2010.

Randy Boone and Bubbie Buzachero allowed 12 ER between them which pretty well sums up their day.

The second base depth in the minors for the Jays is extremely top heavy. The Jays do have a great track record in identifying top-quality 2B prospects, see Aaron Hill and Roberto Alomar, and they very well may have added one more top-quality 2B in the 2009 draft. Beyond the top 2 guys, however, the quality dwindles down to a trickle and is extremely raw to say the least. Still, with Hill being in Toronto for the foreseeable future, there’s really no rush to push prospects through each level, which allows them to develop a little more effectively than would otherwise be possible.

Here are the top 5 2B prospects, 2010 edition:

1- Ryan Schimpf, 21 yrs old, 5’9″ 181 lbs, drafted in the 5th rd of the ’09 draft

Ryan hails from Covington Louisiana and helped LSU get to the College World Series in 2009 by being a leader on the club. He batted a great .336 over 262 AB, with 19 doubles, 1 triple, 22 HRs, and 70 RBI. He did een better than that during the College World Series, hitting .348 in 23 AB, with 2 doubles, 3 HRs, and 7 RBI in 6 games. The sports writes in the State also selected him as the Player of the Year, which is no small feat when you consider players like DJ LeMahieu, Jared Mitchell, and Louis Coleman were all on the same squad at LSU – nevermind other players on other teams in the State. Here’s a video of what he can do from You Tube, which shows his line-drive abilities. He continued his great 2009 season by coming out of the gates quickly in Aubrun once the Jays signed him. He did a quick little stint in the GCL, but immediately skipped it to go to Auburn and ended up with the following stats: 129 ABs, 37 hits, 7 doubles, 1 triple, 3 HRs, 14 RBI, 4 SBs, and a .287 average. He only struck out 24 times while walking 15 times, had a .369 OBP, .426 SLG, and .795 OPS. His defense could get a little better though, with 8 errors being committed for a .953 fielding percentage. I look for the Jays to begin Schimpf’s 2010 season in HiA Dunedin and he could wind up in AA by the end of the season. He plays with tons of character, is a great team mate, has an awesome work ethic, and should be someone you keep an eye on if you’re looking for a 2B in fantasy circles.
