If it were not for the no-hitter/no-walk outing Stephen Strasburg threw in AA yesterday through 5 innings of work, Chad Jenkins would have had the most dominant start of the day in the minors, and one of the best of the season. Lansing (12-7) won the game decisively, 6-0, and has now won 9 of their last 10 games to become of the hottest teams in the minors. They also now sit only 2 game back of Lake County (CLE) for the division lead.

Chad’s line for the day was: 8 IP/ 6 HA/ 1 BB/ 9 Ks/ 0 ER

The outing lowered Chad’s season ERA to 3.75, down from 5.63, and went a long way to refueling his confidence on the mound. It was his first win as a pro and by far his most dominating performance, as no West Michigan hitter made it past 2nd base. He got outs in many different ways, getting 6 by way of pop out, and 7 by way of ground outs.

SS Kevin Nolan (.205) and OF Brad McElroy (.344) both had 2 hits and hit their 4th doubles of the season, while McElroy was able to add a stolen base. C A.J. Jimenez (.414) continued his torrid start to the season with a 2 for 3 day and he added his very impressive 7th SB in 7 games. If his start is for real and continues through the season, it will mean that the Jays have an embarrassment of riches at the position and will have many trade chips to use in the future. CF Kenny Wilson was able to get on base twice with 1 hit and 1 walk, and added his 8th SB of the year.

This team is proving to be very, very good and has all types of great players to go and watch. Hopefully those who can make a pit stop in Lansing and take a game or two in to see this team play first hand.

Here is a review of the major events in the minors for the Jays on Wednesday, 21st of April:

AAA Las Vegas –Postponed

AA New Hampshire – Lost 13-3 vs Trenton (NYY)

The Fishercats were shut down by one of the arms I highlighted in my On The Level post for the 6th of April in NYY prospect David Phelps – a great guy to keep an eye on in fantasy leagues. He threw 6 shutout innings against NH, allowing only 4 hits and 1 walk while getting 6 Ks.

NH did manage to get some runs in on the Trenton relievers, with Eric Thames leading the way with a 2 for 4 day and his first HR of 2010.

Randy Boone and Bubbie Buzachero allowed 12 ER between them which pretty well sums up their day.

As most of us know, the Jays are depending on Chad Jenkins to become something very special after they took him in the 1st round (20th overall) of the 2009 draft. He wound up being sent a little lower than most of us predicted after he showed a ton of poise in spring training, but it seems that may have been the right call. Here are his first game stats:

5 IP, 6 HA, 3 ER, 4 Ks, no walks, and 1 HR allowed.

Not bad for the 22 year old’s first start, but I’m almost positive the second will be better as the adrenaline slows down. Even though he allowed 2 ER over 2 IP, Nestor Molina got the win. He benefited from a Lansing outburst in offensive force that accounted for 10 runs on 14 hits and 2 walks.

The leaders for the hitters were 3B Mark Sobolewski who hit his 1st HR of the year, going 2 for 4 on the day. He got some help from 2B Ryan Schimpf, SS Kevin Nolan, and OF Eric Eiland who who all went 2 for 5 with a double each. Meanwhile, 1B Jonathan Talley and C Karim Turkamani both went 2 for 4.

Other notes for the game, Oliver Dominguez stole 1 base, Mark Sobolewski had 1 error on a throw (his 3rd of the season already), and the Schimpf – Nolan combination turned 1 double play.

That makes Lansing 1 – 3 on the year so far, and they take on Great Lakes (3-1) again Monday with Ryan Tepera leading the way.
