Winter League Update December 2010: Position Players

While the MLB Winter Meetings are underway in Florida, there are Jays prospects still playing winter ball in a variety of southern locations.

From a position player standpoint, the results have not been pretty as of late. Since I last covered position players in the winter leagues on November 13th, virtually every Jays prospect has either regressed or continued their inability to produce.

Winter League Update: Position Players

With the recent press on the official Jays site regarding the success Adam Loewen has had in the Arizona Fall League thus far, it is important to give recognition to the other Jays prospects that have had just as much, if not more, success than Loewen. Loewen has had a very good winter thus far though, posting a .342/.419/.658 line in 9 games to go along with 3 HR and 14 RBI. It is definitely nice to see Loewen, the former 1st round pick and starting pitcher, continue to improve at the plate and strengthen his case on a path to another Major League debut.

Here’s a look at what some of the other notable Jays picks are up to in the Winter Leagues:

CF Darin Mastroianni:

Mastroianni has made a statement in the Venezuelan Winter League so far that’s for sure. He has played the most out of any Jays prospect in winter ball thus far, and through 24 games his numbers are as follows:

.427 AVG, 4 doubles, 2 triples, 1 HR, 14 RBI, .500 OBP, .551 SLG

Not only are those numbers impressive, Mastroianni has drawn 17 walks and been 9-for-12 in stolen base attempts. He’s definitely making a case for a promotion from Double-A New Hampshire, or even a possible look with the Jays in 2011. (more…)

Jays Minors Transactions

The Blue Jays conducted the following minor league transactions over the last few days:

RHP Zach Dials, 24, was released from the AA New Hampshire Fishercats. He had only struck out 1, walked 5, gave up 8 hits, and held a 5.68 ERA in his 6.1 innings of work;
C/INF Al Quintana, 27, was demoted to HiA Dunedin from AA New Hampshire, making room for the next transaction;
C Jonathan Jaspe was activated by the New Hampshire Fishercats off the 7-day DL;
RHP Dumas Garcia, 26, was promoted from HiA Dunedin to AA New Hampshire. He had given up 1 ER, 4 walks and got 5 Ks so far in 7 inning with Dunedin;
C Jack Murphy was transfered from extended spring training to LoA Lansing. Murphy is 22 years old and was drafted by the Jays in the 31^st round of the ’09 draft. He got minimal playing time in the GCL and the NYP leagues last season and had a mediocre showing. It’ll be interesting to see how much playing time he gets with hot starting C AJ Jimenez on board.

Bobby Bell Deals in AA Exhibition Action

Since there is not game action for the Jays, I thought we’d take a look at the AA New Hampshire squad and see how their team is shaping up. Here are a few highlights of their last exhibition game versus Rivier College:

Bobby Bell threw 5 shut out innings, K’d 8, and only allowed 1 hit, showing that he’s in fine form to begin the season;
Amazingly, C Jonathan Jaspe and OF Adam Calderone each hit a grand slam HR in the same inning (the 5th);
CF Darin Mastroianni went 2 for 4 with a triple and a SB;
OF Eric Thames went 1 for 3 with a double and a sacrifice fly;

The Fisher Cats open the regular season with a 4 game series against the New Britain Rock Cats, AA affiliate for Minnesota, Thursday night April 8th at New Britain Stadium.
