Jason Frasor returns to Toronto in trade with White Sox

Ringing in New Year’s with a bang, Blue Jays GM Alex Anthopoulos bolstered the back end of his bullpen with a familiar face, re-acquiring Jason Frasor from the Chicago White Sox in exchange for minor league pitchers Myles Jaye and Daniel Webb.

The move represents the extra right-handed reliever that Anthopoulos was looking to add before the start of the season, but it also likely signals the end of the Jays’ off-season bullpen overhaul.

“[Anthopoulos] basically said with Santos, Oliver, Casey and me, that he’s comfortable with the back end and so am I. I like that foursome,” Frasor said in a conference call to Sportsnet’s Shi Davidi and the rest of the media. “I think there are four guys right there you can rely on.”

Anthopoulos fleeces yet another GM, obtains Colby Rasmus from St. Louis

It’s safe to say that the “Silent Assassin”, Alex Anthopoulos, probably keeps a list of baseball’s other 29 general managers in his office with the goal of robbing each and every one of them blind at least once in his career.

Anthopoulos can now check St. Louis Cardinals GM John Mozeliak off of that fictional list, as he was able to pry highly-touted center fielder Colby Rasmus away from the redbirds in a three-team deal that included the Chicago White Sox.

By now, you probably know which 11 players were involved in the trades, their season stats, and who went where, so there’s no sense in rehashing that too much.

Instead — and more importantly — what does this mean for the Jays going forward?

Jays Get Pronked, The Jays Pen Just Isn’t “Right”

I went to bed after a long hard day believing that the Jays had this one in the bag. But, knowing that things happen quickly sometimes, I changed the channel on my TV, brought it back to the game (so it wouldn’t add 2 hours of baseball I had watched to the DVR) and set it to record the last inning. What I saw when I watched it this morning was about as horrible a game-ending as one could imagine. (more…)

Jays Finally Get Runs From Other Bat Than Bautista or Lind

We can go over the game notes, talk about Kyle Drabek and his learning curve, the pen and their debacles vs dominance, and even the power shown by Jose Bautista as he hit his 11th HR of the season – a shot that was never very far off the ground. Or, we can go over how FINALLY, the Jays got some clutch run production from other players than Jose Bautista or Adam Lind. I decided to go with the latter.

The following is a review of prominent events that have taken place during the past week in the A.L. East, as compiled by Fansided’s writers from each club in the division. This “Week-in-Review” series is one which will run all season long and will be posted each Monday to recap the previous week (Monday through Sunday). Jays Spring Training Stats and Oddities

As we wind down to the final few games of spring training and finally head towards the beginning of the 2011 season, I thought it would be fun to sift through some of the stats from this spring training and to see what looks right, and what looks odd. I want to stress that I don’t put any stock into spring training stats, other than to say that one hitter or pitcher seems to be “right” and healthy, but it’s still a fun excercise that can sometimes point to guys that could surprise during the upcoming season.

Jays Journal: Leonys Martin, Richard Thon, Spring Notes, and Links

I recently broke down the argument for the Jays to sign Leonys Martin out of Cuba (actually, he is currently in Mexico), and heard a lot of feedback from fans who were apprehensive about spending so much money on a light-hitting, good speed and good defensive ability center-fielder. So, I asked John Manuel of Baseball America, a professional who actually has the scouting breakdown on Martin, the following question on Twitter in order to get a sense for how Martin would fare amongst Jays prospects:

Jays Jots: Jose Bautista, Alex Anthopoulos, Beeston + Links, Audio

The Jays agreed to terms with newly-acquired Frank Francisco yesterday, settling on a 1-year/$4 million contract. I was a little surprised that Francisco, the front runner to be the Jays’ closer in 2011, did not receive at least a club option on this deal, considering how long GM Alex Anthopoulos has said he has sought Francisco’s services.

Former Blue Jay and Canadian Shawn Hill recently signed a minor league contract with an invitation to Spring Training yesterday with the Florida Marlins. Hill was released to make room for Rajai Davis in November, but it’s odd the Jays could not have signed Hill to a deal like the one he got from the Marlins for 2011, considering he went 1-2 with a 2.61 ERA (3.08 FIP) in 4 starts (20.2 innings) for the Jays in a small sample size this past season.
