Another Take on the Blue Jays’ 2010 Rule 5 Draft

With so many quality choices available in this year’s deep Rule 5 Draft, it was almost a foregone conclusion that the Blue Jays were easily going to find one player to take in the Major League portion of the draft.

Jays GM Alex Anthopoulos, however, had other ideas.

On a day where, with their 10th overall selection in the draft, former Blue Jays GM J.P. Ricciardi and the New York Mets plucked infielder Brad Emaus away from the Jays, Anthopoulos decided against selecting a player in the Major League round of the draft entirely.

With Josh Hamilton winning the American League MVP earlier today, here’s some clarification on which baseball writers from Toronto voted and what order they voted in:

Jays Acquire Rajai Davis From A’s For Trystan Magnuson & Daniel Farquhar

(6:57pm EST) The Toronto Blue Jays have acquired speedy outfielder Rajai Davis from the Oakland Athletics for Double-A relief pitchers Daniel Farquhar and Trystan Magnuson according to new Jays MLB.com reporter Gregor Chisholm (via Twitter). The announcement was also confirmed via a team press release on the official Jays website.

Davis, whose only knock would be his age (30), is a career .281/.330/.383 hitter in stints with the Pittsburgh Pirates, San Francisco Giants, and Oakland Athletics. He is entering his 2nd year of arbitration eligibility and will surely receive a raise from the $1.35M he made in 2010, but he is under team control until the end of the 2013 season. Rajai Davis isn’t the type of name that screams blockbuster trade, but after a more in depth look, he should help the Jays in 2011 and beyond. (more…)

Jays Jots 11/17: John Buck, Cito Gaston, Shawn Hill

(5:33pm EST) The Florida Marlins have announced that they have agreed to a three year agreement with John Buck. Ken Rosenthal is reporting that the three year deal is worth a whopping $18M pending a physical. As much as I valued Buck’s contributions to the Jays in 2010, that really seems like a drastic overpay by the Marlins. Then again who really cares, the Jays get a sandwich pick in the deep 2011 draft! (more…)
