On Tuesday, we took a look at how eight Jays prospects were doing in the Arizona Fall League, but there are also other winter leagues outside of North America where prospects will flock to and play.

The Jays currently have 11 players (six position players and five pitchers) sprinkled amongst three of the four Caribbean Leagues. The Venezuelan Winter League (VWL) and Dominican Summer League (DWL) each have five Jays prospects playing there right now, with one playing in the Liga Mexicano (LMP). Unlike the Arizona Fall League where players are selected ahead of time, players come and go in these Caribbean Leagues, so I’ll update these every few weeks or once a month.

The Caribbean Leagues give some prospects the chance to return home to their country while also working on their game for next season. The sample sizes are small yet again, but here’s a look at which prospects are playing winter ball and how they’re doing.

I recently broke down the argument for the Jays to sign Leonys Martin out of Cuba (actually, he is currently in Mexico), and heard a lot of feedback from fans who were apprehensive about spending so much money on a light-hitting, good speed and good defensive ability center-fielder. So, I asked John Manuel of Baseball America, a professional who actually has the scouting breakdown on Martin, the following question on Twitter in order to get a sense for how Martin would fare amongst Jays prospects:

“@johnmanuelba Would Leonys Martin be within the top 15 Jays prospects if signed?“

And he answered as follows: (more…)

The Twitter chatter is already buzzing with lots of Jays intra-squad games news, so you know there’s a deep thirst for any baseball news as we near spring training game action. Here are some fo the highlights from the intra-squad game and some of what I’ve read and heard most recently:

J. P. Arencibia apparently added 9 lbs of muscle this off season (power anyone?) and has been the beacon of the team in terms of earning respect through the highest of work ethics. He’s one of the first ones to show up, and one of the last to leave each and every day. To say that he’s taking nothing for granted would be accurate as can be at this point, and he’s showing exactly the kind of focus that a lot of scouts said he was missing at some points in his minors career. If results can present themselves on the field and at the plate, we should expect a great year from our catching duo in 2011. Gregor Chisholm provides us with some very nice insight into why we should all believe in Arencibia’s abilities and in how hard he’s working so far in spring training. Great read. (more…)

The calm before the storm that is spring training allows us to touch on some minor issues that some fans may want to be aware of as we head into 2011. Here are some of the most recent notes:

A recent article published on Baseball America by Larry Millson tells us a little about Moises Sierra‘s issues in 2010. It seems that there were 2 injuries that limited his chances to progress that season: the first was a microfracture in his shin, and the second was a broken hamate bone in his wrist. It seems that the Jays still have faith in his skills, still believe he is young enough to progress, and will therefore give him a shot to earn a spot in AA New Hampshire. (more…)
