Corey Patterson and 3B a Danger to Jose Bautista?

If you were wondering why everyone out there was apprehensive about the decision the Jays made to move Jose Bautista to the hot corner, and you watched last night’s game, you now know why. Miscommunication between him and Corey Patterson on a pop-up almost resulted in what could have been a horrific collision between the left-fielder and Bautista. Although some may say that it was just a one time thing, I say that I’ve see similar scenarios playing themselves out while Patterson was in CF and Bautista was in RF, leading me to wonder: is Corey Patterson a danger to Jose Bautista?

The following is a review of prominent events that have taken place during the past week in the A.L. East, as compiled by Fansided’s writers from each club in the division. Asher Wojciechowski Shines in 2011 Debut

Asher Wojciechowski is one of the Jays fans and evaluator favorites from the 2010 draft and displayed why in his first start of the 2011 season for the Dunedin Blue Jays. Possible spurred on by Deck McGuire’s excellent outing in a previous start, he was lights out on Sunday as he threw 5 innings of shutout ball, allowing a meager 2 hits, no walks, and strikout out 2. Even more encouraging was the fact that he enduced 8 groundouts and only 2 flyouts, indicating that he did a great job keeping the ball down. (more…)

Jays Notes, 11-Apr-11: Davis Hurting, Patterson Activated

Well, Scott Richmond‘s stay with the Blue Jays was as short-lived as possible as he was optioned back to AAA Las Vegas after throwing to only 1 batter. He got the job done, and now gets to go to work to put himself back in play for a longer term role with the Jays should that opportunity arise in the future. He was sent down in favor of Corey Patterson, and for very good reason. (more…)

Jays Journal: Brett Lawrie, Juan Rivera, Jose Bautista Poll, and Links

Here are some notes that we have accumulated from around all things that impact the Jays:

Brett Lawrie, the player who could eventually fulfil Jose Bautista‘s wish to return to RF, is apparently slated to begin his new position learning in AAA’s Las Vegas. He’ll be able to learn from players with lots of MLB experience, like Ryan Shealy and Corey Patterson, and having him in AAA should let us know immediately how close or far he may be from making his Jays debut. Lawrie could be the cockiest player the Jays have had since Roberto Alomar, and we all know how well that turned out! However, is anyone else a little apprehensive about placing the 21 year old so close to the strip? Food for thought. (more…)

Why Signing Scott Podsednik Makes Sense for the Blue Jays

As per an article on the official Blue Jays team site, the team has signed veteran free agent outfielder Scott Podsednik to a minor league contract with an invite to spring training.

Podsednik is expected to report to Dunedin on Friday, and he’ll be in line for a $1 million salary if he makes the Major League roster, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (via Twitter).

I remember thinking when the Justin Upton rumors were swirling back in November that Podsednik would have been a good low-cost pickup for the Jays, considering he declined to exercise a $2 million mutual option with the Los Angeles Dodgers on November 4th in order to test the free-agent market. When the Jays uneventfully signed Corey Patterson to a minor league contract right before Christmas though, I figured that ship had sailed.

It’s interesting how since then, even though Podsednik’s last two seasons were respectable and above his career numbers, GM Alex Anthopoulos was able to sign him to just a minor league contract.

Eric Chavez Works Out For the Blue Jays

There’s nothing like coming home after a long day and seeing some Jays rumors to chime in on. ESPN.com’s Jerry Crasnick reported this afternoon that 33-year-old former Oakland Athletics third baseman Eric Chavez recently worked out for the Blue Jays.

Chavez signed a 6-year-$66M contract extension with the A’s in 2004, the largest in team history, which prevented him from being able to test free agency after the 2004 season. He is now a free agent after the A’s decided to cut ties with him back in November when they declined his $12.5M 2011 club option and opted to buy him out for $3M instead. The talent could still be there with Chavez, but he comes with his fair share of questions. (more…)

Blue Jays Sign 6 to Minor League Deals

As per an official team press release, the Blue Jays have signed outfielder Corey Patterson, catcher Ryan Budde, and pitchers Winston Abreu, Sean Henn, Mike Hinckley, and Brian Stokes all to Minor League contracts with invites to Spring Training.

Patterson is the only new name to be announced on this list, as the other five on this list had all been announced in some way before today.

Mat announced the signing of catcher Ryan Budde yesterday, and Winston Abreu on December 7th. I touched on Abreu’s Winter League progress back on December 8th, and took a look at the Mike Hinckley signing way back on November 20th.
