With the Chicago Cubs primed to rebuild their franchise under new president Theo Epstein, they face a dilemma in what to do with the star of their rotation, Matt Garza.

Image courtesy of Cooperstown Dreams Park

Though Garza is, according to Epstein, “exactly the type of pitcher” that the Cubs would want to build around going forward, the 28-year-old would surely accelerate their rebuilding efforts by bringing back a bounty of prospects if he was traded. This has led to various “reports” linking the Blue Jays to the Cubs and Garza, with ESPN’s Jim Bowden even listing the Jays as the Chicago’s “best fit” in any trade scenario.

Considering the package of players that the Cubs parted with to get Garza in the first place — not to mention the weak pitching market right now — their asking price for him will be astronomical. Combine that with the fact that the Jays’ rotation will already be better in 2012 as-is, the prospects set to knock on the big-league door next season, and the deep list of available free agent starters to choose from next winter, and trading for Garza right now makes no sense for the Jays. (more…)

They represent a more significant upgrade over a guy like Luis Perez, but they’ll be a lot harder to obtain from their respective clubs. Check out the poll at the bottom of the post as well to have your say in terms of what kind of reliever you think the Jays should go after this offseason.

The Blue Jays weren’t involved, and sure, eight player trades are more of a rarity nowadays, but why should Jays fans care about this deal?

Reason #1

The first reason is the most obvious one: Matt Garza is no longer in the American League. Jays fans should be rejoicing and partying in the streets over this one, because Garza was one of the Jays’ biggest headaches on the Rays’ roster.

Outside of James Shields, no starting pitcher on the Rays’ staff had faced the Jays more. In Garza’s 13 starts against Toronto, the Jays mustered just a .294 on base percentage and .320 slugging percentage against him, good for a .615 OPS. The Jays posted their lowest OPS against Garza in his career over any of Garza’s teammates that included James Shields (.783 OPS), David Price (.663 OPS), Wade Davis (.667 OPS), and Jeff Niemann (.688 OPS). Garza had faced the Jays more than any other team aside from the Boston Red Sox, and to make matters worse, excluding his one appearance against the Phillies and Padres, the Jays had the lowest OPS against Garza out of all the teams he had faced in his career. (more…)

This sounds like exactly the type of move that Jays GM Alex Anthopoulos was talking about on Friday when he said that virtually all reports of the Jays being interested in a player have been false.

The Winter Meetings are a different environment for trade talk though, as they provide plenty of opportunities for reporters to leak news because of all of the face-to-face discussions that take place.

How many websites reported the Jays were interested in Rajai Davis, Carlos Villanueva, and Brett Lawrie? There was no “rumor stage” of the news, it just went straight to reporting that the Jays had made a trade.

That being said, MLB Trade Rumors reported about 15 minutes ago that the Toronto Blue Jays are “in hard” for Carlos Pena. (more…)
