Jays Minors Kick-Off 2011 and Other Minors Notes

Assessing Potential Jays Trade Targets: Yonder Alonso

I’ve considered a few pre-season Jays targets that may make more sense than others based on current circumstances. The current circumstances include the Jays reportedly looking to deal Juan Rivera if possible, some players being out of options and new players possibly taking their spots on the roster (Scott Podsednik), the returning health of others (Dustin McGowan), and the depth of the pen and starting pitching overall.

With these things in mind, I have decided to run a short series of articles that will be “Assessing Potential Jays Trade Targets”. These are not probable deals, simply options that I thought should be examined because they have some legitimacy and sense to them. The first player I see as a potential target and the reasoning is as follows:

Jays Minors Transactions Review: July ’10 to Feb ’11

With Spring Training kicking off this week, I thought it would be important and interesting to take a look at the last minor league transactions completed by the Jays. In order to get the best feel for what came and went in the minors, I’ll simply include the additions and subtractions from the Jays affiliates. The time period covered below is end of July 2010 to the last week, which I believe gives us a pretty decent review of changes made to the depth charts, some of which may have been missed by Jays fans.

Also, now that we will have covered the latest and greats of the minors transactions over the last 9 months, we will also be updating all Jays minors transactions in our new “Jays Minors Transactions” page, so check back there from time to time if you’re curious about what’s happening in the Jays affiliates and depth chart.

Jays Notes: Octavio Dotel, Chad Cordero, HOF, and the Draft Order

As we head towards spring training, with less than 8 weeks to go, here are a few Jays notes and news:

I have to ask this of Jays fans, would you rather have Octavio Dotel (37) at a cost of $3.75 million over one year if bought out of his option – $6.5 million if over 2 years, or would you rather have Kevin Gregg (32) for 2 years at a cost of $10 million with a vesting option for a 3rd year that could bring the deal to $16-20 million? My answer would begin with the fact that relievers are a finicky bunch and that any time you can get one the quality of Dotel on a 1 year deal, you’re lowering your risk and exposure a ton. That and it also leaves the door open for a Jonathan Papelbon type addition in 2012. Finally, by letting Gregg walk, the Jays get yet another highly ranked draft pick, so Dotel is not only the cheaper option with more flexibility for 2012, but his acquisition also allows the Jays to continue the building process. Jays Bring Chad Cordero Into RP Competition

What a great low risk and potentially high value addition to the Jays relief competition. The Jays added Chad “The Chief” Cordero to their plethora of relievers who are going to attempt to break camp with the Jays in ’11.

The Good

Chad Cordero has a proven track record, is still young (he’ll begin the ’11 season at 29 years old) and has been a closer in MLB, saving 47 games for the Nationals in ’05.
He comes cheap and will likely be on a minor league deal, which means that he represents depth first, with a possibility to be brought up if required or performance warrants it. (more…)
