The Jays opted to send only relievers this year, selecting 40-man roster members Chad Beck and Evan Crawford along with Wes Etheridge and Aaron Loup, who spent most of their 2011 campaigns with Hi-A Dunedin. While you can’t put much stock into AFL stats and their sample sizes are incredibly small, here’s a look at how the Jays’ pitching selections fared in this year’s edition of the Fall League.

He came over in the Roy Halladay trade. We ranked him as the Jays’ 11th-best prospect before the season. He finished the regular season with a .311/.371/.542 slash line and he captured Eastern League MVP honors.

There was, however, another catcher on the Fisher Cats’ championship roster that deserved a lot credit, who sometimes gets lost among the Jays’ bounty of high-quality catching prospects.

That would be Yan Gomes, who closed the regular season on fire and has is continuing to work on his game in the Arizona Fall League.

The sample sizes are all small, but here’s a look at how the Jays prospects have fared so far. Out of the group, it’ll be interesting to see how Chad Beck does as he could compete for a spot in the Jays’ bullpen out of spring training.

There were a total of 4 Jays prospects on the Peoria Javelinas who played against the Scottsdale Scorpions, who were managed by former Blue Jay Randy Knorr. Here’s a look at what they did:

RHP Alan Farina: 1.0 IP, 0 ER, 1 H, 1 BB, 2 K

Farina pitched a scoreless 6th inning for the Javelinas and, on paper, it looked like he cruised through the inning, where highly touted Washington Nationals prospect Bryce Harper led off. Farina threw all 5 of his pitches in the at bat for strikes, because Harper swung at every one of them. Harper only managed to foul off 2 pitches though, which allowed Farina to notch his first strikeout of the inning. (more…)

As for the Winter League update, the Jays have a total of 10 pitching prospects playing winter ball this year. Virtually every one of the Jays pitchers are having impressive campaigns, except for Matt Daly, who seems to be struggling in the Arizona Fall League (11ER in 9.1 innings).

Here’s a look at the success the Jays’ pitching prospects are having so far:

SP Marc Rzepczynski:

Rzepczynski is obviously the most well known Jays player on this list, not only because of his major league experience, but also his ridiculous numbers in the Arizona Fall League so far through 5 starts:

3-0, 0.69 ERA, 26.0ip, 2 ER, 21 hits, 8 BB, 20 Ks, 1.12 WHIP, .223 opp. avg

Marc leads the AFL so far in innings pitched and ERA. He has gone at least 6 innings in each of his last three starts, and he hasn’t given up any home runs. He is really increasing his trade value if needed, but hopefully he can carry this success into next year and have a strong spring. (more…)
