Belated congratulations to Jose Bautista for winning a Silver Slugger award again this year and to Mel Didier for being recognized recently as one of baseball’s top scouts. Here are some additional Jays nuggets from today:

The Jays signed 16-year-old Venezuelan right-hander Jesus Tinoco this morning, according to Baseball America’s Ben Badler. Badler goes on to mention that the 6’3″, 198-pound Tinoco possesses a heavy fastball that already touches 91 mph and, in addition to being projected to be a power pitcher, he has an advanced feel on his mid-to-high 70s curveball. Tinoco is the third international youngster the Jays have signed who has trained with Ciro Barrios. (more…)

Talk about great support! This is the kind of run production many of us were expecting when looking at the names in the lineup at the beginning of the season. Hopefully it translates to many more wins post All-Star break.

With Spring Training kicking off this week, I thought it would be important and interesting to take a look at the last minor league transactions completed by the Jays. In order to get the best feel for what came and went in the minors, I’ll simply include the additions and subtractions from the Jays affiliates. The time period covered below is end of July 2010 to the last week, which I believe gives us a pretty decent review of changes made to the depth charts, some of which may have been missed by Jays fans.

Also, now that we will have covered the latest and greats of the minors transactions over the last 9 months, we will also be updating all Jays minors transactions in our new “Jays Minors Transactions” page, so check back there from time to time if you’re curious about what’s happening in the Jays affiliates and depth chart.

The Jays are one of many clubs that are starting to pay more attention to talents coming out of the great white North. And who can blame them when the likes of Joey Votto – who just landed a $39 million extensionafter taking off like a rocket in 2010. If they can grab some of that talent a little earlier than has been the case, maybe they can land the next great Canuck! Since the Jays have seemingly increased their chase for Canadian talent, drafting a few guys in 2010 and chasing both Brett Lawrie and Russell Martin, I thought it would be important to keep close tabs on what Canadians are out there to be had. It’s obvious that the Jays are now focused on finding the next Canadian gem and to make headway in getting Canadians all over to think of the Jays as Canada’s team.

First, here’s an updated list of MLB, Minors, and Just Drafted Canadian Talent in Baseball. I’ll also touch on the best future talent available in the 2011 draft.

I recently posted an article about Prince Fielder possibly being a big target for the Jays this off season. Since Adam Dunn is now signed, he can be scratched off the list of possible additions for the Jays this off season, although we already knew he was a long shot when Alex Anthopolous announced additions would likely be made through trade, not the FA market. Speaking of trades, Ken Rosenthal reported that the Blue Jays were one of 3 teams inquiring on Mark Reynolds. I pointed him out as a possibility earlier this off season for the Jays, although I do believe that this was entirely preliminary evaluations for the Jays.

There are better options on the trade market, including Prince Fielder, that may intrigue the Jays much more but that will also come at a much greater cost. Knowing the price of the alternative – Mark Reynolds – before making an attempt to deal for the likes of Fielder makes perfect sense since it lets you know at what point you need to step back and look at these other alternatives. Both fit the Jays power mold, but Fielder is obviously the better hitter and better long-term fit if the Jays can sign him to a lengthy deal.

Having had the pleasure of watching the Arizona Fall League Championship game yesterday in its entirety, it was a great way to see some of the Jays prospects playing with the rest of the league’s most talented prospects. Marc Rzepczynski was supposed to have started the game, but left the Arizona Fall League before the Championship game due to personal reasons.

There were a total of 4 Jays prospects on the Peoria Javelinas who played against the Scottsdale Scorpions, who were managed by former Blue Jay Randy Knorr. Here’s a look at what they did:

RHP Alan Farina: 1.0 IP, 0 ER, 1 H, 1 BB, 2 K

Farina pitched a scoreless 6th inning for the Javelinas and, on paper, it looked like he cruised through the inning, where highly touted Washington Nationals prospect Bryce Harper led off. Farina threw all 5 of his pitches in the at bat for strikes, because Harper swung at every one of them. Harper only managed to foul off 2 pitches though, which allowed Farina to notch his first strikeout of the inning. (more…)
