Poll results: David Ortiz, David Cooper, left-handed relief

Congratulations to the St. Louis Cardinals, 2011 World Series champions. One has to feel for the Rangers, though, as they not only lost in a Game 7 but came so close to winning it all multiple times in Game 6.

Not only was that Game 6 one of the best baseball games I have ever seen, but the series overall was one of the most exciting in recent memory and great for baseball.

That being said, over the last two weeks I included polls in a few articles, and though they are now closed, here’s a look at the interesting results.

Henderson Alvarez is Next in Line for the Jays?

When Carlos Villanueva was placed on the DL, I wrongfully presumed that either Jesse Litsch or Joel Carreno would get the call to fill in when his turn came around. Why? Well, both are on the 40-man roster, and both are older than Henderson Alvarez. Instead of giving Litsch another shot or giving Carreno his first shot, word from John Farrell is that the Jays are seriously considering calling up one of their most prized pitching prospects in Henderson Alvarez. I, for one, am really liking the direction the club is taking now as it continues to call up its best talents. (more…)

Evaluating the Yunel Escobar and Jo-Jo Reyes for Alex Gonzalez, Tyler Pastornicky, and Tim Collins

Last July, the Jays sent SS Alex Gonzalez, who was having a career year after signing with the Jays as a FA, as well as SS prospect Tyler Pastornicky and LHP relief prospect Tim Collins to the Braves in return for SS Yunel Escobar and LHP Jo-Jo Reyes. At the time, only 2 of the players were considered core pieces (Escobar and Gonzalez) because they were the only pieces playing full-time in the majors. Today, all of them aside from Pastornicky are in the majors, which allows for an interesting comparison of both sides of the deal.

In order to get a better grip on the deal altogether, I’ll separate it into 2 portions: the SS portion and the pitching portion.

Jays Journal: Brett Lawrie, Juan Rivera, Jose Bautista Poll, and Links

Here are some notes that we have accumulated from around all things that impact the Jays:

Brett Lawrie, the player who could eventually fulfil Jose Bautista‘s wish to return to RF, is apparently slated to begin his new position learning in AAA’s Las Vegas. He’ll be able to learn from players with lots of MLB experience, like Ryan Shealy and Corey Patterson, and having him in AAA should let us know immediately how close or far he may be from making his Jays debut. Lawrie could be the cockiest player the Jays have had since Roberto Alomar, and we all know how well that turned out! However, is anyone else a little apprehensive about placing the 21 year old so close to the strip? Food for thought. (more…)

Jays Fans Poll Results: “Who’ll win the 4-5th starter spots in the rotation?”

Our latest poll was added in order to get a feeling for who Jays fans believe will win what is sure to be a very exciting battle for the 4th and 5th spot in the rotation. Although the continued improvements of Ricky Romero, Brandon Morrow, and Brett Cecil in the #1-3 spots will be critical to Jays success in 2011, the #4-5 spots could wind up being just as important because of the talent of those who’ll likely land there. With injury concerns usually becoming an issue at some point in the season, it’s likely that we’ll see all of these pitchers in a Jays uniform at some point in 2011, but listed below are your favorite choices and responses to a very important question:

Jays Fans Poll Results: “Are you satisfied with the moves..”

I posted this poll just before the new year, at a time that had the Rajai Davis acquisition and the Octavio Dotel signing were the only major moves made by the Jays and GM Alex Anthopoulos. Therefore, the initial results and leanings of the poll in the first few weeks were entirely different than the results we see today, as we close the poll just before spring training.
