The Blue Jays have been red hot of late winning 7 in a row enterting Sunday`s contest. They were looking to sweep the Yankees for the first time in New York since May of 2003. The Jays sent out 9-6 Marco Estrada who has won two in a row. The Yankees trying to stop the skid sent out 8-4 Masahiro Tanaka.

Game Notes:

  • Marco Estrada picked up his 10th win of the season despite some struggles. He was able to get some key ground balls and strike outs when he needed them most. At one point in the 4th inning he threw 10 straight balls. His control came and went but the ball stayed in the park for him.
  • Again today the offense was all via the home run. Aside from 1 RBI in Saturday`s contest, all of the runs have come in via the long ball. Jose Bautista and Josh Donaldson both with solo home runs.
  • On that note, Josh Donaldson hit his 31st home run of the season. That puts him in 3rd place in all of MLB for home runs. Currently Josh is on pace to hit 44 home runs.
  • Cliff Pennington made his debut today. He entered the game in the 7th pinch as a pinch hitter. The bases were loaded with one out setting up a potential splash in his debut. The result was anticlimactic as he struck out swinging. He did reach base on his 2nd at bat drawing a walk in the 9th inning.
  • The sweep of the Yankees has cut the Yankees lead over the Jays with a nice 3 game swing.
  • Not only did the Blue Jays sweep the Yankees but they only allowed a single run in all 3 games.

Grades:

The offense gets a passing grade today. It was a bit of a struggle to score runs despite the chances they had. They had the bases loaded with no outs and couldn`t convert a run. They had 2 runners on with only one out and couldn`t convert a run. It is a good thing this team can hit home runs. Both runs were scored on solo home runs by Josh Donaldson and Jose Bautista. Speaking of those two, they were the only hitters to pick up multiple hits today. Jose gets the edge on the game ball for his colossal home run.  . Game Ball. Jose Bautista. OFFENSE . D

. Marco Estrada. STARTING PITCHER. B-. Today was an okay day for Marco. It was a quality start and he kept the Yankees at bay. It felt like he put up a massive pitch count but left with only 89 pitches thrown. The curveball was not on at all. The fastball while around the plate just didn`t get the calls. His changeup was mostly on point but he held it back until the 2nd time through the order. Maybe I`m nit picking on someone who tossed 6.1 innings of shutout ball. But, his final line was much better looking than his performance 6.1 IP, 3 H 3 BB, 0 R, and 6 K.

A. The bullpen was called upon today to pick up 2.2 innings of work. LaTroy Hawkins picked up two key outs in the 7th inning. Aaron Sanchez allowed a walk but that was all in the 8th inning. Roberto Osuna pitched a clean inning to preserve the shutout. Their combine line was 2.2 IP, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K. . Game Ball. Aaron Sanchez. BULLPEN
