Minor League Recap – The Bats Awaken

Last night a couple games were postponed for the Jays minor league affiliates, but for those who played there was an outburst of offense.  Both the Buffalo Bisons and the Dunedin Blue Jays were postponed.  This will force us to wait until tonight to see the Bisons have a chance to extend their 6 game winning streak.  The Fisher Cats and Lugnuts did play however so lets dive into it.

The New Hampshire Fisher Cats played and were nothing but terrific.  The Fisher Cats lineup tore apart the Trenton Thunder to the tune of a 10-0 score.  What started out as a pitchers duel between Matt Boyd and Brady Lail turned into a rout.  The Thunder got rocked in the 8th and 9th inning for 10 runs.  The 7 run 8th inning was capped off with a Matt Newman 3-run homer.  In the 9th inning the Cats continued to pour it on with a 2 run double by Kevin Nolan.  That was followed by another RBI single for Matt Newman.

On the flip side of the ball the Cats pitching turned in a shut out led by another solid performance by Matt Boyd.  Boyd left hitters helpless Monday night as he pitched 5 no-hit innings and struck out 6.  He currently tops the league with 24 strikeouts.  Boyd was near perfect but did allow 3 walks.  Luis Perez continued the trend and allowed only 1 hit and 1 walk for the next 1.2 innings.  He sat down 2 Trenton batters via the strikeout also.  Dustin Antolin came on after to leave the Thunder with no hope.  Pitching the last 2.1 innings with 4 strikeouts and only allowing 1 base runner closed the door on the Fisher Cat win.

Off to Lansing where the Lugnuts also crushed the Dayton Dragons.  The offensive charge was lead by Rowdy Tellez who had 2 hits and a 2 run homer and scored twice.  Ryan McBroom contributed 3 hits and 3 RBI as well.  The only Lugnut without a hit was third basemen Gunnar Heidt but even he contributed an RBI on a sac fly.  The top of the Lugs lineup was a true force.  The top four hitters together collected 8 RBI and 8 runs scored on 7 hits.  The Lugnut attack also had some great pitching lead by Chase De Jong.  He got the win by tossing 5 innings and allowing only 2 runs while striking out 4.  Mark Biggs and Chase Wellbrock closed out the game only allowing 1 additional run.
