Blue Jays PODCAST (VIDEO): Roster Depth

Hello Blue Jays fans! In case you hadn’t heard, we’ve begin a new endeavor here at Jays Journal. We started a video podcast. Our first episode came out on Friday. We’ve got another episode of Jays’ Nest for your viewing/ listening pleasure. For this episode, we compiled a group of our writers to discuss the depth of the Blue Jays’ roster heading into the 2015 season.

With roughly one month to go before pitchers and catchers report to Spring Training, things have settled down when it comes to the roster taking shape. We thought it would be interesting to look at what exactly that shape would be. We covered a lot of ground in this episode.

Next: Blue Jays Walk Away From Duquette Negotiations

We wondered if having an outfield that consists of Jose Bautista, Dalton Pompey and Michael Saunders is good enough. With that in mind, it brought up the discussion of where Kevin Pillar fits into this. Is there room for him? Does he deserve more than just a platoon spot?

From there, we considered the depth of the pitching staff. With the Josh Donaldson trade, the Blue Jays lost Kendall Graveman and Sean Nolin who many feel were on the cusp of contributing at the major league level. It’s quite a shot to the depth of the rotation. Are the Blue Jays deep enough to get through a season? In answering this question, the obvious extension comes up of the bullpen.

We looked at who makes the bullpen, who doesn’t and we wonder if Chad Jenkins, Todd Redmond and Marco Estrada seem a bit redundant. One of the guys we hoped would show well this spring is Rob Rasmussen. IF he does, will the Blue Jays have too many lefties out of the ‘pen? Does it matter?

  • The apparent logjam at the catcher position was a rather big topic for our discussion. With Russell Martin and Dioner Navarro currently on the roster, is there really room for Josh Thole? What would R.A. Dickey think?

We spent a great deal of time analyzing the bench players. IF you look at it, it doesn’t appear there are that many to choose from. With Danny Valencia, Steve Tolleson, Ryan Goins, Munenori Kawasaki and Maicer Izturis, there is bound to be someone (or two) being left out. You might be surprised to find out who we think it will be.

I don’t want to give it all away, though. You can watch the video below. Or, if you’d prefer, you can listen to the audio. If you’d prefer to download it, go to SoundEngine.com (HERE). We are currently in the process of making it available on iTunes, so stay tuned for that.
