Pompey and Osuna named AFL Fall Stars

The Arizona Fall League announced its rosters for Saturday’s “Fall Stars Game” with Blue Jays prospects Dalton Pompey and Roberto Osuna representing the Mesa Solar Sox in the East division of the league.

This can only be regarded as good news for Jays fans on the same day that saw Kevin Seitzer leaving town for the Atlanta Braves organization.

This year’s contest features 14 players from the MLBpipeline.com Top 100 prospect list, most notably top prospect Byron Buxton but also Pompey near the bottom at No. 88.

Pompey prolonged his 2014 success in the Arizona Fall League this October, hitting a .289/.357/.421 slash in 38 at-bats with two RBI. Pompey also continued his success on the base-paths, swiping four bags in five attempts. What’s impressive about his slash line is his .357 on-base percentage. This presence at the plate demonstrates his revamped ability to produce good at-bats, something the Jays were seriously analyzing as the prospect continues on his development path.

Osuna on the other hand didn’t have the fall many, including likely himself, had hoped for. In four outings and 7.1 Innings pitched, Osuna produced a 0-2 record dovetailed with an inflated 12. 27 ERA. The No. 5 prospect in the Jays system is coming off his first season after having Tommy John surgery and is still searching for consistency within his pitching.

The good news is that Osuna is still young; at 19 years-old he looks to return to the Osuna that had scouts at Baseball Prospectus raving about his “fluid mechanics” and “above-average velocity into the mid-90s” within the near future.

The game is set to take place Saturday at 5 PM Mountain Standard Time and can be viewed on MLB TV as well as streamed online via MLB.com.
