Game Thread: Gm 2: Toronto Blue Jays at Tampa Bay Rays

Well, the season opener didn’t go so well. After losing 9-2 last night in an ugly manner, The Blue Jays will try and shake it off and get their first win of the season against Alex Cobb and the Tampa Bay Rays.

Viewers will notice the absence of Jose Reyes. He’s been placed on the 15 day DL with hamstring inflammation. Jonathan Diaz gets the call up from AAA Buffalo to take his place. Melky Cabrera fills in at the leadoff spot. Drew Hutchison makes his first start in over a year and a half. That in and of itself is something for Jays fans to tune in for.

Lindy, gives us a jack! He’s hot!

  • http://www.jaysjournal.com Shaun Doyle

So, this is what it’s like to be AHEAD in 2014?!

  • http://www.jaysjournal.com Shaun Doyle

With a lead, I can relax and enjoy the game with a bit less stress…

  • http://www.jaysjournal.com Shaun Doyle

Someone show that replay to JP. What a throw from Navarro!

  • http://www.jaysjournal.com Shaun Doyle

This stall and wait to decide on challenging a call is BRUTAL! They need to adjust this process!

  • Andrew van Laar

Man I wish I could be watching this… I am working doing 5 hours overtime tonight :( Cobb’s pitch count is nice and high! Loving that :D

    • http://www.jaysjournal.com Shaun Doyle

Just think of the overtime pay! Although, you’re working AND following the game AND our Game Thread. Nice.

      • Andrew van Laar

I multi task… what can I say? Also helps that I have four monitors ;)

        • http://www.jaysjournal.com Shaun Doyle

Cripes! You work for the FBI? haha…..wait, you don’t do you?

          • Andrew van Laar

            …. O.o

  • Kyle Franzoni

It’s good to see our pitchers hitting umpires and not Rays. Hutch is such a solid control guy, so tonight we’ll get to see what it’s like to make them swing the bats.

    • Andrew van Laar

Ya! I can understand if you have an off night and get knocked around, but at least make them work for it…

      • http://www.jaysjournal.com Shaun Doyle

Exactly what I said this morning when someone said they lost. I said, NO they won for the Rays

    • Andrew van Laar

Seems like hutch is throwing a lot of balls… 15 strikes 16 balls atm… :S

  • Kyle Franzoni

Diaz with a strong minor league track record for getting on base and he shows that immediately tonight, walking in his first at bat.

    • Andrew van Laar

Lets hope Colby does the good aspect of his bat rather than the bad….

      • Andrew van Laar

I almost hate Colby as much as JP…It seems whenever there is a chance to bust open a lead, he strikes out. Is it just me or has anyone else noticed that?

        • Kyle Franzoni

I don’t know why Colby sits on the fastball in a 2-2 count, especially when Cobb went offspeed to Lind earlier in the game in the same count.

          • Andrew van Laar

Because he is silly. He has sooooooooooo much raw talent. I honestly don’t think his baseball IQ is there though. I was thinking about that the other day and it’s the only way I can reason why he did not steal a single base last year.

    • http://www.jaysjournal.com Shaun Doyle

then a nice hit and run!

  • http://www.jaysjournal.com Shaun Doyle

Hutch OWNED Longoria in that AB!

  • http://www.jaysjournal.com Shaun Doyle

Hutch with a beaut of a double play!

    • Kyle Franzoni

Good job digging down and getting himself out of that jam.

      • http://www.jaysjournal.com Shaun Doyle

They say it all the time, but he really does have great poise…or whatever you call it

    • Andrew van Laar

      Whew! Very nice :D

  • Andrew van Laar

Lawl… Houston is up 6-0 on the Yanks :P top of the 3rd

    • http://www.jaysjournal.com Shaun Doyle

      Boom! Love it.

  • Kyle Franzoni

Not sure how I feel about Cobb’s delivery, mainly the pause. Yeah, it’s not a balk because there isn’t anyone on base, but it is intentionally deceptive.

    • http://www.jaysjournal.com Shaun Doyle

      Like Daisuke?

      • RyanMueller

The teach that pause to centre themselves and control the delivery.

        • http://www.jaysjournal.com Shaun Doyle

          Yeeeess……..sure they do.

          • RyanMueller

Buck taught me that the other when talking abot dice-k…I listen sometimes

          • http://www.jaysjournal.com Shaun Doyle

            To BUCK?! Oh, Ryan……

          • RyanMueller

He has the best hair in baseball

          • Kyle Franzoni

I think his hair calls a few innings…

          • http://www.jaysjournal.com Shaun Doyle

            awesome!

  • http://www.jaysjournal.com Shaun Doyle

Diaz with an RBI. With 2 outs!

    • Andrew van Laar

      JDeeeeeeeee!!!!

  • Kyle Franzoni

Jonathan Diaz with the big knock!

    • Kyle Franzoni

      And the wheels!

  • Andrew van Laar

I just discovered Game Day Mini!! Now I can follow the game and work on 3 1/2 of my monitors!!!! Productivity to the max!

    • http://www.jaysjournal.com Shaun Doyle

I mean this in the nicest possible way, but your employer is lucky to have you. haha

      • Andrew van Laar

My employer is my best friend :P Its a mutal luck thing. For Christmas bonus last year he got us all 40″ LED TVs and bough an 80″ for our lunch room :P

        • http://www.jaysjournal.com Shaun Doyle

          Where do I apply?

          • Andrew van Laar

We are actually going to be hiring soon :P Are you any good with web design?

          • http://www.jaysjournal.com Shaun Doyle

Nope. I can barely work the Jays Journal stuff. hahaha

          • Andrew van Laar

Bahahaha well you could be the DPG. Dedicated Pizza Getter? :P

          • http://www.jaysjournal.com Shaun Doyle

Do I get a sick TV?

          • Andrew van Laar

If you can get our pizza here from across town in say… 5 minutes that could be a very real possibility.

  • Andrew van Laar

May I say that because of how well Hutch is pitching so far this year, I may be developing a bit of a man crush? Is that weird? I don’t think so. I know you all are jealous of my honesty…

    • http://www.jaysjournal.com Shaun Doyle

I admire you, sir. His beard is pretty. And, you know he can hit his spots….if you know what I mean.

      • Kyle Franzoni

No shame here sir. Cling to what feels comfortable.

  • Andrew van Laar

He mowed them down in the 4th!

    • Andrew van Laar

      Hutch for Mayor!

      • Andrew van Laar

        For MPP!!!!

        • Andrew van Laar

          FOR PRIME MINISTER !!!! <3!!! <3!1!!!!!1!1!…

  • http://www.jaysjournal.com Shaun Doyle

Rasmus goes OVER the shift. I’m just happy he didn’t K.

  • Kyle Franzoni

Rasmus gets a nice bounce off of the foul pole.

  • Andrew van Laar

Cobbs at 92 pitches with 2 out in the 5th. Do you think he is coming back out? I am guessing no.

    • http://www.jaysjournal.com Shaun Doyle

First start of the season? I wouldn’t

    • http://www.jaysjournal.com Shaun Doyle

Maddon is making him tough it out

      • Andrew van Laar

        Dang… tough kid!

  • http://www.jaysjournal.com Shaun Doyle

    Everything coming up Diaz!

    • Andrew van Laar

      What did he do?

      • http://www.jaysjournal.com Shaun Doyle

Routine grounder, shoe stuck on infield, rolled ankle a tad, nearly tripped but still managed to get Loney out at first. Buck and Tabby said Loney should have run harder and not just assume the out. I think he was running.

  • Andrew van Laar

What do you think Hutch’s pitch count is today? I am going to guess he’ll go 6 innings if he can keep it around 80 pitches.

    • http://www.jaysjournal.com Shaun Doyle

5 innings, 73 pitches. They’ll let him do the 6th. At least start it.

  • Kyle Franzoni

Has Goins hit a single ball out of the infield in these two games?

    • http://www.jaysjournal.com Shaun Doyle

Ugh. I was wondering if anyone would notice his mediocre offense when May rolls around. Will it blend in, or stand out?

      • Kyle Franzoni

        Let’s hope it blends.

        • http://www.jaysjournal.com Shaun Doyle

I just can’t see it being cancelled out by his glove…

  • http://www.jaysjournal.com Shaun Doyle

    Hutch’s line: 83 pitches, 5.1 innings, 3 hits, 3 walks, 4 strikeouts. 0 ER!
    Aaron Loup in

  • http://www.jaysjournal.com Shaun Doyle

    Loup shuts that shiz down!

  • http://www.jaysjournal.com Shaun Doyle

Reviewing a potential Rasmus HR. Checking to see if fair or foul

  • http://www.jaysjournal.com Shaun Doyle

He hit it so high, it went over the standard foul pole. There is a foul pole dangling from the roof, but they don’t meet. The ball went between the two

  • http://www.jaysjournal.com Shaun Doyle

    Foul ball!

  • http://www.jaysjournal.com Shaun Doyle

Aaaaaaaand then Rasmus Ks. Of course.

  • http://www.jaysjournal.com Shaun Doyle

What is Edwin’s deal? His bat flies into the stands…again. Really? How is this a constant thing?

  • http://www.jaysjournal.com Shaun Doyle

I’m making a 2014 prediction: Aaron Loup will be an All Star!
