@Donnyboy

If Prince Fielder ends up in a Jays uniform, it's for 1 reason alone: the amount they're willing to commit yearly for 5 years total surpassed what other teams were willing to give him.

I'm not sure what that amount would be, but I will also add that the Jays may be the only team out there that would see an opt out clause for Prince as a good thing. If they hedge their bets that he'll opt out like CC did, then they'd be more likely to get involved. Having said that, AA has a history of only signing players to team friendly terms without any gimmicks, so I'd say the chances of his being interested in Prince at all are slim to nil as a result.

Good information Mat!! I am anxious to see where Baseball America rates the Blue Jay Organization & Farm System in 2012. My guess is as high as #4 or #5 in MLB.

As far as adding Prince Fielder goes, it makes little sense to me. After converting Adam Lind to 1B last season, I believe the Jays are going to give Adam at least half a season to show whether he can revert to his 2009 form. If he further regresses or exhibits the same form as in 2010, I see one of two things happening, a trade for a premier 1st baseman or a promotion from AAA (D'Arnaud) , with JP Arencibia being converted to 1B.

Furthermore, I don't think the Jays organization wants anything to do with Fielder's agent, Scott Boras.

I dont see impatient fans as having any choice. Jumping ship now is akin to pete best leaving just before that took off so well. They certainly will tolerate a real run of contending years and that's what is on the horizon if they dont do anything too risky too early. I'm ok with Fielder at the right length, but he carries plan killing risk on his terms. He'd be great short term and is out of the question long term, quite an extreme. With him and Boras I dont think short is likely. In our position, the timing of getting big into free agency is critical. Commiting big at this early stage is unwise, imo. It's understandable wanting it because this kinda looks good enough where a couple of big additions might get us in line for that extra wildcard. I think that speaks more to the job being done rather than signifies the time is now. Teams doing this always go thru a growth period and should allow it to happen. Texas being the most recent example. We shouldn't be aiming for maybe the wildcard now, no maybe anything .It looks to be set up much better than that. I think with the sheer number of arms there are coming (insurance, no way they all fail), talent level looking at us now, and all the money available to use where it best fits then guarantees success. There's your goal of an annual contender in a short 4 years.Take the sure route..

AA has done a good job. My concern is whether fans will tolerate another forth/fifth place finish. Personally I don't think that pie in the sky is going to sell for another year. This talent has to start showing on the field in a dramatic fashion (wins). I see no downside to signing Fielder for up to seven years. It sure would alleviate a lot of question marks in the pitching.

It seems to me Anthopolous has done a superb job. If you take a gm position with a mandate to start over, you give yourself a 5 year, or so, time frame to start seeing things come to fruition. What happens in Toronto in the 4th or 5th year? The deepest pitching talent pool in the game is added to this core of players. The average age will be nothing. I see nothing of significance given up for Lawrie, Morrow, Rasmus or Escobar. I'd probably of given it all up for Lawrie alone. The potential payoff with those 4 is huge. Their primes will be for us if we choose, nothing short of great trading. In the meantime he's upgraded the minor league operation to state of the art. Cleared dead salary so all the financial flexibility you could ask for is there when you switch gears. It's timed to occur when we can expect inevitable yankee decline. Mega money still tied up in an old CC, A-Rod and Teixiera. Jeter and especially Rivera are gone. The yankees have much work to do to maintain their level. A timed perfect storm of talent, youth, pitching depth, financial freedom and weakened competition backed up by a model farm operation. That is no one year wonder set up. It looks to be about as good as you can do it.
