When it comes to pitching, I'm not a big fan of putting all your eggs in one basket with an "Ace" or a "stopper", or a 20 game winner (see Halladay, Roy on DL with broken leg, appendicitis, etc.). I don't care if one of our pitchers ever wins a Cy Young or appears in an all-star game. I want 5 horses that can go out there and book their 200 innings a year, and keep their team in the game until the 7th inning.

Not flashy, but you win a lot of ball games.

I'm not disappointed. A couple of years down the road, I would feel different, but there are a lot better ways to spend that kind of money right now.

The rumor mill is still churning it out, and the word is that The Blue Jays have other irons in the fire besides YD. Whatever happens, we will never see it coming.

ok, just got the news that the rangers won the "sweepstakes". i can't say i'm not disappointed, but i am however very pleased that the jays at least made an honest effort to get him. now it's time for plan b. go after gio gonzalez hard and get him. then take the money saved and go after fielder. gonzalez is a proven pitcher that would help the jays immediately and signing fielder would clearly help the offense score a bit more.

Well said! The fans will come when the Blue Jays start winning. That is not necessarily a function of the amount of money they spend on payroll. They have invested heavily in drafting, scouting, and player development over the past couple of years, and we are just now starting to see the tip of the iceberg.

Case in point: Of the 10 teams with the highest payrolls in MLB, only 3 made it to the playoffs, and none won the World Series. Of the 12 teams with payrolls over $100 million, only 4 made it to the playoffs, and yes, The Cards took it all, with a payroll just a little over half of what The Yankees paid.
