Veteran baseball analyst and former Cardinals catcher Tim McCarver has been named the winner of the Ford C. Frick Award, the National Baseball Hall of Fame announced today.

The award is presented annually by the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum for excellence in baseball broadcasting, and McCarver will be honoured as part of the Hall of Fame Weekend next July at Cooperstown.

McCarver beat out nine other finalists, including the legendary voice of the Blue Jays, Tom Cheek. Will Cheek ever get his due?

McCarver has been an analyst on television for three decades and won six Emmy Awards, so he has obviously earned this achievement. Cheek, however, has now been a finalist for seven consecutive years after being the Blue Jays’ voice for 27 years until he retired in 2004. He passed away the following year in 2005.
