agreed about Wise. This is a waste of time. Looks like everyone is conceding the rest of 2011, and becoming consensus that 2012 is rebuilding too. Disgusted. The team has been rebuilding for years and years. AA is good at drafting, but somehow, the gap between the prospect and the MLB star has not panned out. I want to win, and I am getting sick and tired of losing, and losing, and losing, esp. to the rivals we need to beat. Maybe THAT is the reason behind Bautista's rants: he wants to win too. Give another year of rebuilding, and I would not be surprised to see some trade demands (ie JoBau says I want out of here).

About AA not moving over Yunel: well, we saw how how much that was to be trusted with the EE/Bautista fiasco at the beginning of the season. He said one thing, then did another. Hech is a better fielder than Yunel, whose UZR has been decreasing year-on-year. If we have no choice (and Johnson is NOT the answer), then Hech is up.

And BTW, I called it on Hill, that he would find resurgence in the NL.

@talesen Bingo. If the Jays are in the bottom 15 of the MLB their 1st rounder is protected should they go after some Type A's (they can't lose the 22nd pick either). So, not only can they draft a better player the higher the pick is, they can go after some of the big boys (Fielder, Reyes, Pujols) if they want and not lose their 1st pick (only 2nd round and beyond). Win-Win off-season.

Mat - your conclusions are close to mine...

Basically - we've a few possible phenoms on defense/offense they are: Lawrie (already up, on budget, on schedule), Thames (his defense will improve - he's a spectacular athlete who's spend almost 0 time working on defense), d"Arnaud (MVP of his AA league - picture GG defense with a Paul Molitor bat), Gose (picture Devo's GG defense with Barfield's GG arm and a 15 HR bat with - unfortunately a reasonably weak OBP - the weak OBP will restrict him to a mere 60 or so SB's - IF - he gets the OBP up a bit - he'll near 100 some year) and last - but not least - Hechavarria (picture Ozzie Smith 's defense with Scutaro's OK bat - only with more power than Marco)...

All of the above will be in place BEFORE September 2012 - AT THE LATEST. If I was AA I'd have that group (who I call the NEAR FUTURE - remember that group will be challenged by Marisnick, Knecht, Jimemez, Crouse, Hawkins and others over the next few years) up and running ALL SPRING - so that we can actually start 2012 with them - learning on the job as it were.

The fans will be energized and hopefully understand it will take that group - with Bautisa, Escobar, Rasmus, EE and others helping out - a couple of years to dominate - much like it took the 1983 Jay's till 1985 to dominate.

Anthopolous has already said he won't move Yunel Escobar over to 2B for Adeiny Hechavarria, because that's losing too much value when Yunel is still a top flight defensive SS.. He also said Hech will be at AAA all next year and will have to play his way onto the squad, just because of his contract he is by no means guaranteed a spot in the lineup.

AA also said he doesn't see their time frames interfering with each other, meaning (in my opinion) he expects Yunel to either have moved on as a FA or be traded by the Jays by 2013 or 2014 at the latest, should Hech ever actually make it.

We won't be pursuing Fielder, unfortunately it's just unrealistic at this point.. Lind is a good hitter and when the time comes I believe he'll put it all together. Lots of confusion in the outfield with Snider, Thames, Rasmus and Gose competing for two spots (although Gose, again, not until late 2012 at the earliest).

We're definitely not going to be ready to compete next year, but 2013 is a realistic playoff year, while a championship should be possible between 2014-2018. It depends on a lot of factors, but the minor league depth and talent is there, and the team is coming together. It's a slow process to do things the right way, but that's what we're doing.

[...] Jays Fall Below 500, Fail to Meet Expectations Let’s set the record straight about what’s been happening for the Jays of late: no matter who it is they’re facing, they are starting to come well short of playing to their full potential. Between Jose Bautista‘s temper tantrums about strike calls and frustrations over Adam Lind‘s lack of production in the 4-hole, the Jays have looked like a team that is asking more of itself instead of just going out there and playing the game to their potential. Who do I blame for this?
A few comments: Correct me if I’m wrong, but if the Jays remain about 16th, their 1st round pick is protected, should they go after one of the big FA names. I’m not sure how much Adam Lind gets you in a trade. Taking off the Jay-goggles, can he really be considered a plus first baseman across the league? Lastly, I don’t think we should count on Hechavarria yet. I believe he will need to earn his way onto the club next year. Ideally, as you said, he may well be able to earn that spot after a couple months, but should we lean on that? Let’s be patient and give Johnson that look we promised him and go from there.
