It Sounds like the Jays are fixing to move Aaron Hill at the trade deadline instead of letting him walk at the end of the year. Furthermore, the Jays need to offer Hill arbitration in order to pick up the draft picks. My guess Hill ends up with the Detroit tigers by trade deadline.

I think the serious message that was sent to Hill via the Escobar signing is thus:
We are giving a guy who is really good at his position $5 million for 2 years plus 2 and you expect us to extend you for two years at $8 million per season - you haven't been decent mlb player in over two years!

Hill will never qualify as a type a free agent.

Pete, that's a great idea! Perfect for when Johnny Mac
retires. Hill's like Johnny Mac with his D, with a plus
bat.

I wonder if Hill would be willing to "super sub" at 3rd, short, and 2nd? I bet he could handle left, maybe even right and 1st in a pinch. He would be a nice replacement for Johnny Mac. A great bat off the bench or PR. Money certainly wouldn't be a problem for Aaron. Guys who can do all that I listed, and do it well, are invaluable. It's like having 3 or 4 superior guys on the bench.

I have a feeling Hill will bounce back next year. I think maybe a change of scenery will do him wonders. It doesn't help him any that he started off injured like last year.

Mat, good topic.

I see the Hill Decision differently. Hill is NOT an elite player. Hill is an A Type free agent and no team in their right mind would give up their 1st (or 2nd) 2012 Draft pick for him. I know the Jays would NEVER sign him if it meant giving up our 2012 first draft choice.

We need an "elite" up the middle. I suggest we go get Jose Reyes - he earns 11 million this year. While 2011 is a career year for the guy, his career stats of 290/339/440 are worth quite a bit. He's got speed 26 steals this year caught 6 times. (Career 357 steals caught 90 - 75% success rate). I wouldn't do this IF I though Hech was going to be an elite guy - I don't think he ever will be. I see him as JMac - great defense.

Reyes turned 28 on June 11th this year. No one is worth what he'll get - BUT - this might be one deal we have to make in order to make it the next level.

As Hill is a type A free agent I guess he walks after this year and AA takes the 2 draft picks come back.

AA will either sign a stop-gap guy (like Jamey Carroll) or trade for a high-end prospect like Jason Kipnis.

I hope Hill has a bad, borderline terrible year (not really,)
and we decline his options, then sign hime to a much more
reasonable contract.

I don't understand the conventional wisdom that Hechavarria is going to become a MLB starter. So far he hasn't indicated he can hit, and if the Jays intend on contending over the next few years, why would they start an all-glove SS. The Jays didn't start Johnny Mac even in the years they weren't contending. But Hechavarria is still young and still has time to figure out hitting. However, it's going to be either Hechavarria at SS or Escobar...and neither one has the value if they move to 2B, so I don't understand the Escobar move to 2B.
