"I’m just surprised that the Jays couldn’t get anything for him in trade."

Really dumb. Like, never bothering to read you again dumb. Eveland obviously incredibly different in terms of age and who might have a use for him. Come on. Think.

I since heard that he requested the release. Like you, I agree that he figured to be battling for playing time in Toronto and might be able to find a better situation elsewhere. Also, I don't think Pods had any trade value at this point because of the injury. There is a real possibility his foot won't allow him to play at anything approaching an elite level this season. With Eveland last season, he at least had a few quality starts with the Jays.

Mat,

It isn't the oddest transaction by any means!! AA promised him that if he wasn't in the club's plans he would release him to try and catch on with another major league team. Think of Buck starting in September instead of giving JP some work....AA promised Buck he would start ALL year!! Keeping your promises is what builds a respectable organization and bodes well in signing FA in the future. For example, if any player asks Buck or Pod about the Jays, they, at the very least, will say that AA is a man of his word!!

I do prefer Davis and/or Patterson over Pods. Davis has great base running and base stealing instincts. Patterson is good base running, but in the outfield, I question where is head is at times, i.e. routes to balls. I'm quite sure that if they did call up Pods, his foot would be a factor for sure. I'm unsure of Pods trade value, as no other team picked him up in the Spring, even with such decent numbers. I do hope Podsednik does "land on his feet" (pun intended, and hopefully gently) with another club.
