This is the first I've read of Lawrie having trouble at 3B. I thought the Jays were surprisingy impressed with his defense in ST... I agree that there comes a point where a slow start becomes a trend, but I don't think Snider is there yet. I also disagree that trading Snider now would be trading high. To date, his MLB performance has not lived up to his potential. The Jays would be trading low on him unless he turns into a complete bust, which I don't see.

I do like the option of getting Hill signed at a cheaper rate as you set up above, but let me ask you this: do you really believe that no team out there would be willing to offer more than the $8 million the Jays could keep him for?

After seeing what Werth went for this off season, and knowing how much a power-hitting 2B is worth, I could see him getting as much as $10 million, even with a down year in 2011. The Mets (under supposed new ownership), Mariners, and particularly the Athletics, come to mind immediately as teams that would likely be willing to offer that much. So if you're Hill, why would you come back to Toronto at a reduced price and for such a short term deal?

Just a thought.

Thames will hit, it's the strike outs that worry most scouts.

Give Gose and Hech some time, they'll figure it out.

Snider in trade.....I'm seeing it more and more as a possibility, so you very well may be right there, particularly if Lawrie can't stay in the infield.

Great post Mat! Love Snider. The guy is struggling but produces somehow in some way. Still want to see him crush is first triple decker of the year, that'll get things going for him.

I noticed that Lawrie has played a few games at 2nd too. Is that accurate? I can't help but feel like its going to be a LONG while before we see him at the Rogers Center.

I agree with the previous comments. And like all Jays fans I want desperately for Travis Snider to become an elite player. It saddens me to say that I do not think that this is in the cards for him. With Lawrie's troubles a third base it is becoming more apparent that he will have to move to the a corner outfield position. Which presents a problem for the Jays - who previously believed that they had their core corner outfielders in place already. The solution? Trade Snider while his trade value is still high. Snider could be used as a chip to get the next "ace" pitcher that comes on the market. I imagine that Snider + McGuire is a reasonable starting point for any trade discussions.

Whie I believe that the Jays will need to acquire an "ace" pitcher it also concerns me that for all of our legitimate pitching prospects we have very few top notch hitters coming up in the system. We need to have more than just Lawrie and Perez (sorry but Thames and the other lads are not blue chip hitters... either are Gose or Hech). Perhaps Snider gets traded for a blue chip 3b prospect.

As for Hill ...
I think that the article over-looked an additional and obvious choice. The Jays could decline the option and sign Hill at a cheaper rate. This is what happened to E5 and the likely course of action for the Jays. Hill one year 5 million.

Snider got one hit after looking absolutely horrible all night (and most of the season). I don't expect that one hit. and the fact that he broke a bat over his leg, to signal any sort of turning point.

Sorry, I want to believe you (and I wish you were right), but I don't see how that one hit proves anything. He is far from turning anything around.
