It seems to me that Boston lost a pretty good pitcher, one they wanted to keep, but did not have room for on the 40 man roster. Both Tampa and Toronto had a look, and decided he was too young and inexperienced to crack the roster of either the Rays or Jays. Boston still wants him, so they stonewall a trade and will likely get him back again. The kid gets to try on a bunch of different uniforms, gets lots of practice packing his bags and a ton of frequent flier miles, and ends up where he started. End of story.

I read the same report put out today, so you very well could be right Yves. I wrote this piece before that was made public. We’ll see how it plays out as it seems that Farrell may be a fan of Cabral’s.

… the Jays are trying to ACQUIRE Cabral from Boston, not trade him to the Sox. More to the point, they want to keep him but place him in the minors (he finished last year as High-A). Since the Rays selected him from Boston in the Rule V draft before placing him on waivers, he has to be offered to Boston for $25k unless he breaks camp on the 25-man roster.

Mat doesn’t understand the basics of what is going on. The Red Sox own the rights to Cabral right now. He would have to stick on the Jays 25 man roster all season for us to keep him – which he won’t since he has never pitched above A ball.

AA likes Cabral so he picked him up and is hoping to work out a deal with the Red Sox for Cabral, since Boston ‘owns’ him at the moment. It would probably take cash or a lesser prospect or a PTBNL to get Cabral.

Mat – this is an excellent discussion piece – gets the old trade speculation juices flowing – very interesting – in the end I suspect Cabral for a minor piece…

George – CLEARLY this thread is NOT “reporting” in any shape form or manner – it is 100% speculation – and as such it is remarkably comprehensive and thought provoking. At no point does Mat attempt to present it as anything other than informed opinion. And I might add – well informed and interesting opinion!
