Gose goes good - but will he ever hit enough for it to matter? That, is the question.

Remember Sil Campensano (sp?) - the "real" Gose won't be seen until he's 26 or so - in the meantime we've projection, tea leaves and tarot cards. He's 20 and has very little position player experience - so far so good - I think it's almost 50/50 that he learns to get on base at a high enough % to become a star.

Keith, thanks for the positive words on the article.

After reading more and more about Gose prior to when I wrote the article, a lot of people seem to forget that Gose is still only 20 years old and he's been converted into a position player full-time from initially being a pitcher.

As I stated in the article, I think he will flourish under the Jays coaching and they will definitely work on his approach at the plate in terms of plate discipline.

It may not all come together in 2011, but by the end of 2012 after Gose has gotten even more required at-bats, we should really start to see what he have in Gose (good or bad).

I remember when Corey Patterson was a #1 Minor League Prospect in baseball and was widely touted as a can't miss 5 tool Major League player.

It is a heavy crown to wear and not everyone turns out like a Ken Griffey Jr. or a Carl Crawford.

I hope Anthony makes a giant leap forward this season, but I have reservations at this point that he will ever dominate Major League pitching. It may very well be the other way around.

Matt,

This rating if very deserved as you have indicated he is still young and has unbelievable speed, defense and an arm. With that speed, he just has to make contact and he will be an All Star lead off guy. He is still filling out and definitely has Gap power. I don't think enough fans are giving credit for his skills, lack of positional playing time and the premium position he plays!

As you have indicated, the big thing he will need to work on this year is:
1 - pitch recognition (will come but is likely taking time due to his conversion from a pitcher)
2 - strike zone control (will come but is likely taking time due to his conversion from a pitcher)

Thus raising his OBP. I would expect the first couple of months to be challenging for Gose this year as the team works closely with him on refining his swing.

Also don't think that AA has not been strategic by having Gose invited to the big league spring training camp. It allows Dwayne Murphy and Farrell to have access to viewing his swing and help him make adjustments. It allows him to see how guys like Bautista and Lind prepare. I see the second half of the season being the real test for Gose.

Once again great article!

My thought to Bourn comparisons and some of the comments listed above are these:

If Anthony Gose had been taught from the beginning to drive the ball as hard as he can, his power numbers would be entirely different than they have been within the Phillies system, one that asked him to simply become a slap hitter. The Jays changed his approach, and I see no reason that he won't be able to develop into 10-20 HR power range with a TON of doubles as he drives the Rogers centre gaps.

My comparison for Gose would be like Jose Reyes in terms of offence (circa '05-'08), but as nobody we've ever seen man CF for the Jays defensively. His range and gun of an arm combined are unmatched. If he reaches that potential, and we believe he will, he deserves the #4 ranking.

I actually like where you placed Gose.

If you listened to AA talk after the Gose/Wallace trade, Gose was considered a significantly better prospect than Wallace/Taylor by both the Jays and Phillies scouts. Meanwhile, Wallace makes the top 50 on every prospect top 100 list and Gose is no where to be seen.. Logically it means that either Gose was drastically underrated or Wallace was drastically overrated by all the prospect sites.

That being said, I do have a concern.

Given the two following conditions in A ball:
1) Many infielder's defense is kind of shotty.
2) The infields themselves are kind of shotty.

I would assume that someone of Gose' speed should be a lock to hit 300, and he's not. Granted he is really young, and from reading this fantastic write up, you get the sense that batting coaches are experimenting a ton with his mechanics. There is a good chance that his stats will fly once he figures out what works for him.

Either way, I like him, and am excited to follow his development.

Keep up the good work guys!

The only thing he needs to improve is his OBP. If he can at least get on base at above average rates, then he's an elite prospect. If not, he's a fourth outfielder.

With such a weak bat I don't understand why he is so highly valued. There are lots of good defense no offense type guys floating around the bigs right now. A guy like that doesn't start on a team that wants to contend for a world series in a few years, I really hope his offensive numbers take a big step forward this year.

I don't like the idea of Gose hitting leadoff. His OBP is never going to be spectacular, and i have doubts about whether it could even be above average. Sure the speed is fantastic, but speed with no OBP is basically Rajai Davis.
