I have to disagree here, the Jays sign Jose because he is a great slugger and he is willing to leave some money on the table. ManRam is a cancer in any of the clubhouse that he was in for years, and how many world companions has he won? Being a nice person has no bearing in how well the player perform on the field.

I am ok with this deal only to the point that Jose will not turn back into a pumpkin. If he actually does, look for the whiners to complain especially the team take a step back this season.

I had been of the opinion that the Jays should wait until the end of the season to see what they had in Jose. It fit with what AA was doing, keeping money on hand and not spending on long term contracts until they figured out what they had in some prospects. But ... after thinking about this, Jose is not going back to what he was pre last year. The walk rate is high and he has actually been doing this since the all star break of 09. Plus at the end of the day you are not just paying for his bat, he is a plus defender so even if his bat drops off a bit, you have an asset in the field. At the end of the day, I'm OK with this, it's a bet, but one that I think gives better than even odds that you would pay more for him in the future than the 13 million a year we got him for now.

+1 on a good deal and 5 years is not forever (and AA has proved anything is moveable). It's a risk but the upside is way bigger than the downside and that's why AA has done this and exactly what you captured in his quote.

I really don't understand the complaints here. No matter what contract you sign anyone, there is no guarantee if a player lives up to it.

During the conference, Jose mentioned he thinks he'd be more valuable in RF. I would have liked to hear what AA & JF think about that.

Seems like a good deal to me. What is not a good deal is the arrival of Damien Cox as sidekick to Bob McCowan. If this is McCowan's foil through the baseball season, his show is doomed.
