If they wanted to do something like that though, they would have done it already and not waited until the 11th hour before the hearing before doing it.

The fact that they have not (it seems) come close to a long term contract or even settled on a one year deal by now probably means this goes to arbitration. I'm not so certain the Jays win but it's a possibility and they seem to feel they can.

Whoever wins though, the fact that it went through arbitration seems to make the prospects of any long term deal fairly remote. Unless Bautista takes a big step back this year, there will likely be a fair number of teams interested in him in November.

How about a third option. Anthopoulos likes to "think different" in these situations so lets say they forego arbitration, sign Bautista to the one year 10 million plus contract while lauding him and his potential value to the Jays. Build him up and, more importantly, build up the relationship and, possibly, re-open the door to doing a long term contract as the season progresses and we get a look at how Bautista is performing.

Great analysis, scenario#2 is the more likely I think. I think his breakout is legit, and he will put up impressive numbers in 2011. Unfortunatly the Nationals have set the bar on what kind of contract he can expect if that is the case. looking at the age of the team, and the timeline for contention..the wise move would be to trade him in the middle of the season i think. With anything approaching last years numbers..some of the offers would have to be very intriguing I would really hope.

P.S. Love the prospect series...the wait for spring training is killing me, a few extra this weekend would be much appreciated:)

I really believe that Jose is disappointed that no efforts were made, thus far, to sign him to an extension. If it does go to arbitration, I'd be willing to wager that Bautista will be traded by the deadline or will walk to provide the Jays with (hopefully he'll be a Type A) 2 high picks.

Jose's trade value in 2011....now there's a question worth addressing....
