Correct me if I am wrong, but posting fees are blind, right? So no team can tell what another is bidding, and the highest bidder gets the opportunity to attempt to sign the player. I think they have 30 days to sign, and if they don't sign, the posting fee doesn't have to be paid. Why not put in a posting fee slightly above Dice-K's? Ya never know. I don't see the Jays going that far with the money, but looking at that potential 2014 rotation, with a possibility of a Morrow extension, and wow.

75 million just to negotiate with the player....sorry but I don't think you could ever get a worthwhile return on that investment, on top of paying him boatloads of money for him to get his feet wet in the major leagues. Anyone who thinks it's worth it is crazy...I can understand it from a fans perspective but from a business one it's just ludicrous. We are much better served to draft and even sign a free agent in the league.

Good stuff.

The money and the pitch counts are a slight concern, but really, Yu Darvish is easily a number 1 or 2 starter on any staff right now in the Majors. If 100+ million is the mark that people are projecting, then that shouldnt be a concern since if you want a premium arm to anchor your rotation, expect to spend that same amount regardless of if theyre from the LA Dodgers or the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters.

What is satisfying to know is that if the Jays are in the running for Yu and if they are lucky enough to have him sign, you have to know that AA and his group have gone over this kid like a fine toothed comb and see that staff ace in Yu Darvish.

100+ million is a lot, but if thats the price to pay for a number 1, you pay it.

The Jays are already heavy in pitching in the minor leagues. They will be spending some of that money hopefully locking up Bautista for four years or so, Snider, and I think should be open to picking up a free agent hitter when they decide it's time to spend. Our drafted pitchers come up at much more affordable rates already have a number of options for fifth starter between Stewart, Rzep and to a less extent Litsch. Rzep has shown himself quite capable of missing bats, and we have plenty of pitchers coming up behind them. Paying out his current team plus a contract to me seems to price this contract beyond it's value.

Too much money if you ask me ... wait until the next ace pitcher is demanding a trade. The jays have the young pitchers and players (Deck McGuire, Kyle Stewart) that they need to trade for a number 1 starter. They should wait and go after the next Greinke, Hallady etc...

I think irrational exuberance is the term that Warren Buffet would use to describe the way that a lot of Jays fans are behaving right now. I mean, seriously, Darvish for well over $100 million dollars? (If you want to be frightened, take a look at some of his pitch counts.) Papelbon? Really? When he's making $12 million this year? Did we learn nothing from BJ Ryan? The Jays just got out from under the millstone of a contract that was VW. It would be foolish to jump immediately into another.

I don't see it happening..

The amount of money we're talking about wouldn't make sense unless you are Boston/New York, who doesn't care if they are wrong..

Darvish is likely going to command $100 million. That includes contract and posting fees.. This is under the assumption he is a hotter option than Dice K.. Which I believe he is..

The Jays have some money to spend, but they don't wanna handcuff themselves to a bad contract... When they give out those kind of deals it will be to proven big leaguers, not the next shitty ass Dice K.

Great analysis. Darvish's numbers are fantastic, and it seems like the timing might work out pretty well for the Jays. But that's a ton of money...
