The calls that were made and missed during the Jays and Rays games (multiple) were more of an annoyance than what happened to Galarragga, although they occured so late in the game for the most part that they hurt the "integrity" of the wins by either team. Calling Pena out the way he did, you would think that Angel Hernandez had it in for Carlos Pena and wanted to look so cool making the call so loudly and with such flair. That pretty much says it all about his character and how he views his job. He's pretty much an umpire that takes his job to be too important to allow players to win and lose games, and that he should basically impose himself in order to be seen and heard.

I've heard many announcers and former players state that if you never notice the umpire(s), they're doing a great job, and I abode by that motto as well. They make some very important calls and are crucial to the game, but they shouldn't be the ones seen and heard. Angel's call was wrong, his refusal to give Pena a time out when Gregg wasn't in motion yet was wrong, and the entire series - which was a very tight affair that could have gone into any version of wins/losses - was ruined by the umpiring. That's probably the saddest thing of all. We got some awesome pitching, clutch hitting, beautiful defensive plays, and what do we remember? The umpiring. Nice.

i'm just curious what your opinion is of the blown call that occurred in the rays/jays game - the tying run being taken away when the replay clearly shows that sean rodriguez touched the bag. actually, i'm more curious about your opinion of angel hernandez vs jim joyce. joyce showed integrity in admitting his mistake. hernandez (with joe west by his side) is standing by his call regardless of how ridiculous it is.
