That's an interesting point you make Michael - about the salary Wells would actually be able to get on the open market in comparison to what he's getting paid. I'll look at that in an upcoming post. I'm not sure if he's worth more or less than Johnny Damon...that's very debatable mostly due to age and defensive abilities, and the fact that Wells has been playing injured. Would 10-12 million be accurate? If so, the Jays would have to eat 10-15 million per year from 2011 to 2014....way too much to allow for a deal to take place.

It's still my Christmas wish for him to be dealt without taking on that much, but I doubt it can happen until he heightens his value or the Angels, Red Sox, or Yankees become desperate for one reason or another!

Mat,

As much as that would be excellent for the Jays, it seems almost impossible to get rid of Wells without eating a good chunk of his salary (as you stated in your title). He's making way too much money. Let's say his production would be worth something like $6M a year in the open market on average for the contract's lifetime. That means you'd have to somehow make up some $86M in value just to break even (that is, for someone to take on the contract without giving anything back). I don't know how well regarded Martinez is with the Mets; he's the third highest ranked prospect in their system. To get someone like that, you'd probably have to give up Wells and the best prospects in the Jays farm to just come close to matching his value.

Wells' contract is so bad that you would have to give up prime prospects on your team to get rid of Wells' deal. At this point for the Jays, I think it's best the team just move him to a corner outfield or just eat his contract in general. Sort of sad, because the Jays organization is run fairly well, but the Wells deal is just an awful noose around their neck.
